Chapter 1: “Family History”

Friday morning, June 5, 2018

“Katie,” the coarse whispered voice called. “Katie, help me.”

Jessica sat upright in bed and pushed her blond hair behind her ears.

“Not again,” she whispered.

Ginger, the Warner’s golden retriever, paced beside Jessica’s bed. She put her hand out to soothe the dog’s distress. The quiet pleas usually only lasted for a minute or two. She looked over at the clock, almost four-thirty.

Ginger whined.

“Shh, it’s okay, girl.” Were the kids awake? She stopped petting the dog, putting all her concentration into listening. The house was quiet.

As if on cue, the voice called out again. “Katie, help me.”

Was he in the cellar? Jessica pushed the sheets off.

“Katie, help me.” The voice had moved from the cellar to the backyard. Could anyone move that quickly?

“Getting Away With Murder”

Joe couldn’t stop thinking about the trial.  Move on they told him. But how?  Rob Glitz had murdered Stephie, and he was free. Restless, Joe took a last sip of coffee as he stood. A tall, barrel-chested man, he filled the small lunchroom with his presence, and all eyes turned his way. Joe nodded to Sam and made his way back to the meat-processing floor.
