Mae McGraw’s June 2026 Newsletter: North & South Celebrate Independence Day
During the Civil War both the North and the South celebrated the Fourth of July with parades, picnics and fireworks. The festivities, however, reinforced the division of the country’s ideals. The North framed their speeches and gatherings with America as a single, indivisible nation, and a reminder of the war’s efforts to maintain our country’s union. The celebrations in the South focused on state identity, the defense of Southern culture, and a rally cry to support the war effort.
After four years of war (1861-1865), the country’s union was re-established and the Northern philosophy won out, giving Americans a broader more inclusive meaning of freedom as many also celebrated the abolition of slavery.
